State Senator Virgil Smith is under arrest on allegations of aggravated assault and malicious destruction of property in connection with shots fired at the car owned by his ex-wife.
The incident happened Sunday outside of Smith’s home.
No one was injured in the shooting.
The Detroit News Reports that the incident began after his ex-wife stormed into his house and assaulted his girlfriend.
The newspaper, quoting from a police report, says that Smith told police he did “the most stupid thing in his life,” by opening fire on his ex-wife’s automobile.”
Smith is a second-term Democrat from Detroit.
A liberal organization is calling for State Senator Virgil Smith’s resignation if accusations that he fired a gun during a domestic dispute on Sunday are true.
Progress Michigan Tuesday issued a statement saying “Violence like this has no place in our society and anyone – especially elected officials – who engage in these inexcusable acts need to be held accountable.”
Smith, a Democrat from Detroit, is awaiting word from the prosecutor’s office to learn what charges, if any, will be filed against him for the Mother’s Day incident at his home.
