Congressman Kildee Hopes new House Speaker is Open to Moving Nuclear Waste Legislation

A Democratic congressman from Michigan is hopeful the new speaker of the U.S. House is more open than the previous speaker was to moving key bills to the floor for a vote.

Congressman Dan Kildee, D-Flint, in particular, wants his bill requiring an international committee to weigh in on Canada’s plan for a nuclear waste site near Lake Huron to get a vote.

Kildee says he’s talked with Speaker Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, who’s pledged a more open process.

Kildee is also lobbying Canada’s new prime minister to stop the proposed waste site, which is less than a mile from the shore of Lake Huron and across the lake from Tawas City.

A final decision is expected next month or early next year.
