Computer Coding Could Fulfill Foreign Language Requirement for High School Graduation

High school students could claim computer coding classes as a way to fulfill their foreign language requirement to graduate under legislation introduced in Lansing.

State Representative Lisa Posthumus-Lyons, R-Alto, is sponsoring the bill and says coding is a recognized language worldwide and should fulfill a world language requirement in Michigan.

She says there’s more demand for people to have coding skills out of college so Lyons also sees the legislation as a way to bolster some student’s job prospects.

Lawmakers are currently on spring break so the earliest the bill could be taken up in committee is the week of April 12th.
