Public comment is being accepted through October 12th regarding efforts by a Canadian mining company which is seeking a mineral lease for 320 acres of land in the northern Marquette County.
But an environmental group is speaking against the idea, saying it’s a delicate watershed which is no place for mineral exploration or industrial growth.
Alexandra Maxwell of the group Save the Wild U.P. says the area includes habitat for the Kirtland’s Warbler as well as archaeological sites.
Some disagree, adding the mine will also help the economy.
Maxwell says mines are temporary jobs that are part of a boom and bust cycle and there are ghost towns in the state to prove it.
