Lawmakers on four different Michigan House and Senate committees will meet Thursday to bat around ways to ensure a veteran’s home in Grand Rapids continues to operate on the up and up.
State Representative Ed McBroom, chairman of a House oversight committee, says a scathing audit of the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans is the springboard for the discussions.
The audit found the home lied about checking on patients who may have fallen and didn’t properly handle abuse and neglect allegations.
McBroom, an Upper Peninsula Republican, says requiring state inspections of the home, which is privately run, and altering the way the facility is funded are among the changes lawmakers are weighing.
