CLK Schools Launches New Scholarships with $2.2M Endowment

The Calumet High School college scholarship program has received a significant boost.

The John M. Hill and Ruth Hendra Hill Scholarship Fund has been established with a $2.2 million endowment.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Hill were members of the Calumet High School class of 1929, although John, who was commonly known as “Jack,” did not graduate. He later received his GED. He spent his life as a sheet metal worker and foreman in California, and also invested in rental properties. And, neither he nor Ruth lost their love for the Copper Country.

Jack passed away in January of 2019, with Ruth having died earlier. Their estate left three rental properties to the CLK School District to be sold, and the money used for scholarships.

School officials say the endowment proceeds will be used to fund 15 scholarships for Early College and dual enrollment students, for graduates attending community colleges or trade schools, and for alumni attending four-year colleges. The first awards will be given out this spring.

Overall, Calumet High School provides $135,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors each year, from a variety of funds established by alumni, community members and local organizations.
