Civil War Veteran Gets Headstone

A veteran of the Civil War received a headstone last week for the first time. Private Darius Bunker was buried in an unmarked grave on Mackinac Island in 1914.

Dewey Jones with Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Marquette says those who fought in the Civil War need to be remembered.

Bunker was held prisoner by the Confederates during the war while mistakenly considered a deserter by the Union Army.

His family requested a military headstone that was provided by the American Legion Post on Mackinac Island.

A dedication was held that included family members, the American Legion, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and members of the Boys Scouts from the Upper Peninsula serving as the Governor’s Honor Guard at Fort Mackinac.
