Chassell Man Swims To Shore After Falling Out Of Boat

A local angler is fortunate to be alright after falling out of his boat while fishing.

About 4:30 Monday afternoon, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department along with the Chassell and Bootjack First Responders responded to a call of a boat that had washed up on shore near Fisherman’s Lane and Portage Entry Road in Chassell Township.

A 15-foot MirroCraft boat was found that belongs to a 48-year-old Chassell man who is known to fish in that area.

Emergency crews began a search of both sides of the canal and the owner of the boat was found walking on Jacobsville Road near White City Park in Torch Lake Township.

He was treated by Bootjack First Responders for possible hypothermia and then reunited with his boat and brought back to the Chassell side of the canal.

The man says he fell out of the boat while trying to land a fish.

When he fell into the water, he was unable to catch up to his boat because the wind was blowing it away from him.

He said he was just able to swim to shore as he began cramping up due to the cold water temperature.

There was a life jacket on board the boat, but he was not wearing it when he fell in the water.
