Officials in the central Upper Peninsula are hailing the state’s recent approval of the Superior Trade Zone. The Zone includes Delta and Marquette Counties. It’s the sixth project of its type in the state, and the first in the Upper Peninsula. ““This is simply a very innovative and effective way, proven in the other five Michigan zones, that it works. We’re very happy to get going on this.” said Marquette Mayor Mike Coyne, who added that the incentives that communities within the Zone will be able to offer to businesses will mesh well with the infrastructure already in place. “We have two deep–water seaports in Delta County and Marquette County and an international airport. We need a better infrastructure of rail and once we get that going, businesses will be able to do economic development by being here.” The Zone will enable communities within Marquette and Delta Counties to work across political borders to offer incentives to potential job providers.
