The Copper Country Intermediate School District Board of Education is being recognized for their efforts during School Board Recognition Month.
Certificates were presented at the Boards regular monthly meeting this week where they were congratulated and thanked for their untiring dedication to school governance and to the children of the Copper Country ISD.
Superintendent George Stockero informed the board that a recent local superintendent’s meeting, he was asked about the possibility of creating an area-wide crisis team for schools.
Stokero started by contacting local school counselors and school social workers who had recently attended a crisis management seminar.
He then met with Dr. Susan Donnelly and Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean. During those discussions…many names from the community, law enforcement, clergy, mental health counselors and the medical field were identified.
Stokero sent out invitations to gauge willingness to be part of an area-wide crisis team and many have accepted this invitation.
The next stop will be to have the first organizational meeting with all involved.
The hope is that no school has to deal with a tragedy, but should they, this group would be there to help the school deal with the situation.
In other business, Former L’Anse School District teacher Angela Elmblad will be the new Literacy Coach and Consultant for the Copper Country ISD.
Elmblad is currently in the same position in Colorado and has ten years of experience in this area.
The ISD Literary Coach will work with all the local schools, specifically working with K-3 teachers to help them access how best to help struggling students.
