CCISD Students Bring Home a Majority of Awards at Regional Automotive Competition at Bay College

Copper Country Intermediate School District students excel while competing at the annual regional automotive competition held at Bay College. CCISD competitors dominated at the event taking home an exceptional amount of awards.

Ty Crisman, a senior at Houghton High School and second-year automotive student, took away third place in the regional Maintenance and Light Repair category. In the Master Overall category CCISD students were challenged by multiple timed hands-on testing skills in engine repair, drive train, steering and suspension, and electrical tasks. CCISD swept the category with Ethan Pelli a senior from Calumet, Matthew Moyryla a high school student, and Carter Worm, a junior at Calumet coming in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively.

CCISD automotive instructor David Narhi says that the students’ success at the regional competition is a testament to each hard work and desire to learn. And that their achievements are a reflection of the quality training provided by CCISD CTE programs. He added that he’s incredibly proud of his students for all of their accomplishments at the competition and looks forward to seeing them excel at states. Students from the automotive program will move onto the state competition held in Grand Rapids in mid-April competing against students from across Michigan.

The Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD) is proud to announce its students’ outstanding achievements at the annual regional automotive competition held at Bay College. Demonstrating exceptional skills and knowledge, CCISD competitors dominated the event, securing 80% of the awards in a testament to their hard work and dedication.

In the Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) category, Ty Crisman, a second-year student and senior from Houghton, earned a commendable third place. His competition involved a rigorous combination of a written test, a hands-on safety station, and a challenging timed new vehicle inspection, requiring keen observation and precision to identify discrepancies and measure various vehicle fluids and specifications accurately.

The Master Overall category saw remarkable success from CCISD students, who faced a written test followed by multiple timed hands-on practical stations. These stations tested a wide array of skills, from Engine Repair and Brakes to Drivetrain, Steering and Suspension, Engine Performance, and Electrical tasks.

Ethan Pelli, a second-year CTE student and senior from Calumet, captured third place in the Master Overall category. Matthew Moyryla, also a second-year CTE student and homeschooled, secured second place, earning a $1,000 scholarship to Bay College. First place was awarded to Carter Worm, a first-year student and junior from Calumet, who received a $2,500 scholarship to Bay College for his exceptional performance.

We’re all excited to see how they will perform at the state level and have every confidence in their abilities to excel.”

These talented students are now eligible to advance to the State competition in Grand Rapids in mid-April, where they will represent CCISD and compete against the best from across Michigan.
