Should students be allowed to choose which school bathroom they use based on the gender they identify with?
State Senator Tom Casperson doesn’t think so and he is taking steps to prevent it from happening.
Under guidelines being considered by the Michigan Board of Education, students would also be allowed to choose their preferred name and gender for the school district’s records.
It’s called the “Safe and Supportive Learning Environments for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Students.”
In response, Casperson has introduced a bill that he says will stop the initiative dead in its tracks.
In his legislation, students with their parent’s permission would be allowed to use a single-occupancy restroom or a staff restroom, but not restrooms designated for the opposite sex.
The public comment period on the guidelines runs through May 10th.
