Calumet Volleyball Wins Livonia Showdown – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball over the weekend…

  • Calumet won the D3-D4 Showdown in Livonia. In pool play Friday, the Copper Kings defeated Allen Park Inter-State and Manchester, and split with Mendon. In bracket play, Calumet defeated three top-10 teams… Pewamo-Westphalia 2-0 (25-17, 25-12), Shelby 2-1 (25-14, 21-25, 15-11) and Plymouth Christian 2-0 (29-27, 25-18) in a hard-fought final. For the weekend, Allie Bjorn had 29 digs, 2 aces and 37 kills; Jackie Kiilunen had 31 digs, 13 aces and 48 kills; Maddie Torola had 18 digs, 11 aces and 39 kills; Jess Anderson had 37 digs and 23 perfect serve receive passes; and Bella Coppo had 97 assists.
  • At the Marquette Sentinel Invitational Saturday, Hancock defeated Manistique 2-0 (25-16, 25-22), and lost to Kingsford 2-0 (25-19, 25-15).

On the volleyball schedule tonight…

  • Houghton entertains Ishpeming. Coverage will begin around 6:10 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Hancock welcomes Negaunee.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Chassell.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek visits Ontonagon.

In boys soccer…

  • Houghton blanked Escanaba 2-0 Saturday. Ethan Heckel and Grant Northey scored for the Huskies. Jonah Falker earned the shutout in net.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team swept Davenport 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-20) Saturday. Meg Raabe led the Huskies with 11 kills. Tess Hayes had 35 assists and a career-best 18 digs.

The NMU volleyball team fell to seventh-ranked Ferris State 3-1 (25-22, 10-25, 27-29, 19-25). 

College Soccer

The MTU women’s soccer team blasted Roosevelt University 6-0 yesterday. Julia Pietila scored twice for the Huskies.

The Northern women’s soccer team played to a 0-0 draw at Purdue Northwest yesterday.

The NMU men’s squad fell to Parkside 1-0.

MLB

The Tigers closed their regular season with a 9-5 loss to the White Sox yesterday. Kerry Carpenter homered. Kenta Maeda started, gave up five runs before leaving in the fifth inning, and took the loss.

The Tigers will open the playoffs with a best-of-three series in Houston. Coverage will begin at 2:05 tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday (if necessary) on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers wrapped their regular season with a 5-0 loss to the Mets. 

Milwaukee will host their opening-round series tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday. Their opponent will be decided after today’s doubleheader between the Yankees and Braves, which will make up two games washed out by Hurricane Helene.

NHL

The Red Wings will split their squad for two exhibition games tonight. Half the Wings will host the Penguins, to make up a game that was called off Saturday because of travel issues in Pittsburgh. The other half will play Detroit’s scheduled game at Buffalo. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Packers nearly overcame a late 21-point deficit, but fell to the Vikings 31-29 yesterday. Jordan Love, who looked rusty in the first half after missing two weeks with a knee injury, threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes to make it close.

In last night’s contest, the Ravens stomped the Bills 35-10.

The Lions entertain the Seahawks tonight on 99.3 The Lift. 

In a second Monday night contest, the Titans visit the Dolphins.
