Calumet student wins U.P. Spelling Bee

The top speller in the Upper Peninsula this year is right here in Calumet.

6th grader Zander Worm of Washington Middle School is the winner of the U.P. Spelling Bee.

More than a dozen schools competed in the finals.  Moderator Jerry Carnes says that the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are given the words ahead of time to study, at least at first.

“The kids get a list of words and it is up to them to become familiar with them and be able to spell them and become familiar with the definitions and pronunciations. However, once we go through that list we go to the stump list and that list the kids have not received and at that point they are reverting to their basic spelling skills in order to make it through that part.”

Competing in the spelling can be nerve-racking, but not just for the students.

“We tell them they are not half as nervous as their parents but often the nerves work in their favor, it keeps them on their toes and it causes them to stop, take their time and think,” said Carnes.

Zander will go on to represent the U.P. in the national spelling bee in Washington D.C.

Houghton Middle School student Sweta Pati was the runner-up.
