Calumet Players to Hold “Miracle Worker” Auditions

The Calumet Players are holding auditions this week for the spring production of The Miracle Worker.

The play recounts the story of Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing as an infant because of illness. Through the dedicated efforts of teacher Anne Sullivan, she learned to communicate, and became a world-renowned advocate for persons with disabilities.

The play offers roles for adult men and women, and children.

Players board member George Wagner says no preparation is needed before the auditions…

The audition process itself will involve excerpts from the script being passed around, and scenes kind of being performed through a cold reading format.

Sessions are scheduled for tonight and tomorrow night at 7:00 in the Calumet Theatre ballroom. No advance registration is necessary, and anyone interested in taking part is welcome. Callbacks will take place Wednesday.

Wagner says behind-the-scenes help is also needed to make the production work…

There’s set construction, painting of the sets. There’s a lot of work to do with the sound and the lighting elements of the show, as well.

Because the play is set in the late 19th century, assistance is also needed to create period-authentic costumes.

The Miracle Worker will be staged the last weekend in April and the first weekend in May at the Calumet Theatre.
