Calumet Planning Commission slogs through rezoning

For months, the Village of Calumet Planning Commission did not have enough members for a quorum and could not meet. Now that numbers have been boosted, the body is running into a new problem as it attempts to complete a comprehensive rezoning plan. Commissioner Virginia Dwyer spoke to the Village Council about differing opinions between Calumet representatives and the firm they have employed to provide updated maps.

The map was very incomplete and wrong. They had streets where they didn’t belong. I’m not sure that some of the boundaries weren’t incorrect.

Village Manager Caleb Katz says that the two sides are so far apart they even reached out to Calumet Township to see if it could provide a judgment on who is right.

I know our Planning Commission chair spoke to the assessor over there, but he couldn’t provide a lot of guidance because it isn’t necessarily in his wheelhouse, or something he would handle.

Katz says the village will be looking to meet with Beckett and Raeder in the coming weeks to address their concerns.

The council also accepted the nomination of Dean Lahti to the Downtown Development Authority. The DDA and Main Street Calumet will meet next month to discuss a potential merger. The village continues to work hard to re-staff its various governing bodies.
