Calumet DDA adding new member

The Calumet Downtown Development Authority met Tuesday for roughly 90 minutes. They discussed what services were available and what needs to be added or enhanced to help bring new business to the village. Incubators, like that provided at Michigan Tech, are well-known and help with the organizational structure of a fledgling company, but the group said that marketing options were limited. Chairwoman Leah Polzien said the DDA had been directing most of its efforts at rehabilitating commercial space.

I guess what we struggle with a lot in Calumet is that there are people who want to start businesses and would like to open a business, but the physical locations don’t exist yet because they need to be rehabbed.

The group approved Dean Lahti to fill a vacancy on the board. It is intended to have nine members, including the Village President. Lahti is currently wrapping up studies at Michigan Tech. He is expected to graduate this semester with his third degree, a Bachelors of Science in Communication, Culture, and Media. Lahti’s appointment must gain the consent of Village Council and President Brian Abramson, who was not at Tuesday’s meeting.

The DDA scheduled a meeting on March 11th to explore merging with Main Street Calumet.
