Calumet Copper Kings Girls’ Basketball Team Comes Home Champions

It’s time to hang another banner, but this one will be for state champions.

The Calumet Copper Kings girls basketball team returned home after winning their first ever Class C State Championship.

The Kings knocked off Flint Hamady 57 to 49 on Saturday in the final game.

Coach Jeff Twardzik said he knew his girls could do it.

In his first year as the coach in Calumet, Twardzik said his team won because they really worked for it.

Team Captain and Center Ellen Twardzik said this was a total team victory.

Twardzik described the moment when she began to realize they were going to be the champions.

It may be the first state championship, but Coach Twardzik sees this as possibly the start of something more.

It was a victory for the team, but also a big win for the school and the community.
