Michigan Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley and State Supreme Court Justice Richard Bernstein brought their Michigan Hidden Talent Tour to the Upper Peninsula yesterday. They’re encouraging employers to hire workers with disabilities. Bernstein knows the challenges handicapped workers face first-hand – he’s blind. “When someone says to you, ‘I want you to come work for me,’” Bernstein explained, “It is impossible to quantify how much that feels and means to be given the opportunity to be part of a workplace and to be a part of a community.” Calley promises it’s an investment that will pay dividends for the employer. “If employers will give someone with a disability a shot, what they’ll find is that it’s not charity, but what they’re doing is giving an opportunity to talented, dedicated, and hard–working individuals that will make their workplace better.” Calley says he hopes attitudes can be changed, so that, in the future, hiring individuals with disabilities will be a normal part of everyday business.
