Traffic was slowed for about 30 minutes in Baraga early this afternoon when a fishing boat slipped off its trailer on US-41. The incident occurred at the entrance to the Baraga Marina, just south of the M-38 intersection. As the truck pulling the boat turned north onto US-41, the good ship “Goofy” bounced off the trailer and onto the highway, where it skidded to a stop in the southbound traffic lane. Fortunately, there were no oncoming vehicles. The Village of Baraga crew came to the rescue with a carrylift. They hoisted the front of the boat with a chain, placed blocks under it, then slid the forklift underneath and picked the “Goofy” up. After determining that the “Goofy’s” hull hadn’t been punctured, she was carefully carried back to the marina, refloated in Keweenaw Bay, and then reloaded on her trailer. You can see video of the adventure here.
