Much was discussed last night at the Houghton County Board of Commissioners meeting. An update was given on the repair and maintenance of the courthouse and Commissioner Tim Palossari was assigned to look at the courthouse and figure out what needs to be done. Multiple bids were received in regards to the old DHS building in downtown Hancock and Commissioner Tom Tikkanen, who is a commerical appraiser, will be the one to negotiate a starting listing price for the building. Board Chairman Scott Ala says although they want to get the most money they can for the tax payers, the building could be great for a new business in downtown Hancock.
Ala has also received approval to look into the county’s finances and attempt to reorganize them. Ala will assemble a team of experts who will help set up a plan, which he says could help the struggling retirement account.
It was also announced that the last day to file for open county positions is on April 22nd at 4pm and the open positions include the county clerk and all county commissioner seats and so far, nobody has filed.
