Bipartisan Bills Strengthen Domestic Violence Laws

Republicans and Democrats in the Michigan House have joined forces to introduce a series of bills designed to strengthen domestic violence laws in the state.

The six lawmakers say their intent is clear — to reinforce to abusers that, “no means no.”

State Representative Klint Kesto is one of the half-dozen lawmakers behind the series of bills. His piece of the puzzle would protect the information of domestic violence victims in hopes of preventing repeat attack.

“We’re not going to allow this to happen over and over again with these individuals who think it’s okay,” said Kesto. “It’s not okay.”

Another bill would give domestic violence victims a legal route to terminate the parental rights of their abuser while a third would stiffen penalties for abusers who attack pregnant women.
