Grade school students in Michigan would get their vision screened more often under legislation before a House committee Thursday.
State Representative Amanda Price is sponsoring two bills in the three bill package and says the goal is to head off a reading problem at the pass.
She says a drop in grades doesn’t always mean a student has a learning disability.
Instead, Price says, it could point to something as simple as a student having a problem seeing the blackboard.
The legislation would also require a student to get an eye exam if a teacher notices they may be having a vision problem.
Under the proposal, Medicaid would cover the cost of the eye exams for low income students.
