Bills to Require Inspections of Kitchens in State Prisons Aired in Committee

The state would no longer keep an eye on the food being dished out at Michigan’s prisons, under bills aired before a House committee Thursday.

The legislation cuts the state out of the prison kitchen inspection business and hands those duties off to county public health departments.

The measures were first introduced in response to problems with Aramark, the former food service provider, which the state oversaw.

Allegations of maggots in food, serving food half-eaten by rats and serving spoiled food dogged Aramark until the state cancelled the contract with the company in July.

A new company, Trinity Services Group, has since taken over.
