Prison kitchens in Michigan would undergo regular inspections under legislation picking up steam in the New Year.
The bills, one of which is sponsored by State Representative Ed McBroom, would require the state to inspect kitchens run by a third party.
He first introduced the bill in response to problems with Aramark, now the state’s former food service provider.
Allegations of maggots in food, serving food half-eaten by rats and serving spoiled food dogged Aramark until the state cancelled the contract this summer.
A new company, Trinity Services Group, has since taken over.
The legislation was heard in committee in September and has been hung up in negotiations ever since.
McBroom says it may be time to put up or shut up in 2016.
