Legislation to allow for a court e-filing system took effect on Friday.
State Supreme Court Justice David Viviano says the new system will be designed to modernize court functions by moving away from paper filings.
He says the change will make a more efficient process for people who need to file documents with the courts.
It’ll cost and extra $25 to e-file in a civil case, but a judge can waive the fee for those who can’t afford to pay it.
Viviano says that money will be used to fund the system.
He says the plan is to fully implement the new e-filing system over the next five years.
Viviano says his hope is that court pleadings eventually become available online for free or for a small fee.
