Bills Targeting Poachers are Aired in a House Committee Hearing

Will increased fines, the threat of jail time and losing their hunting license keep poachers from targeting elk, bear, moose and turkey in Michigan?

The question is before a Michigan House committee as it debates bills cracking down on poachers.

State Representative Lisa Posthumus Lyons thinks increased fines are a good deterrent. She says the higher the fines the better the chances a poacher won’t try it again after they’re caught a first time.

However State Representative Anthony Forlini disagrees. He questions if poachers know there’s a fine in the first place.

The legislation has already passed the Senate and awaits a vote in a House committee.
