Bills Signed Into Law to Provide Financial Opportunities to Disabled Michiganders

Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley has signed into law bills designed to provide Michiganders with disabilities more financial opportunities.

Calley, who can sign bills when the governor is out of the state, says the bills give families a tax-exempt option to save money to support loved ones without worrying about losing access to other benefits.

Among other things, bills in the ABLE Act authorize savings accounts to be used for spending on education, housing, transportation, employment training and support, along with health and personal support services.

Another bill in the package allows money in an ABLE Act account from being used in determining financial eligibility for assistance programs.

The program is similar to a 529 savings plan to pay for college.
