Michigan will soon regulate amateur Mixed Martial Arts under legislation that passed the Michigan House Wednesday.
State Representative Harvey Santana is sponsoring one of the bills and says, with no rules in place, promoters have been putting fighters in danger by creating lopsided fight cards in hopes of filling arenas.
The new rules and regulations will prevent promoters from pitting an inexperienced fighter against an experienced one and requires fighters to register with the state and get medical clearance before each fight.
That clearance includes getting tested for Hepatitis C and HIV.
Female fighters will have to be examined to ensure they aren’t pregnant.
The legislation also creates weight classes for fighters.
The bills now await the governor’s signature.
