Police would have to get a search warrant before looking through your emails and text messages under a resolution working its way through the Michigan House.
The ACLU of Michigan says police departments in the state have devices that can skim data from your cell phone without you knowing it, which should be regulated.
The resolution calls for a rewrite of the state’s constitution, which requires the voters’ approval. So even if this resolution clears the House and Senate a question will still be placed on the November, 2016 ballot.
It was recently approved by a House committee and awaits a vote in the full Michigan House.
