Bill Would Require Sex Ed Classes Teach Affirmative Consent

Legislation is being introduced at the state Capitol to address the growing problem of sexual assault on college campuses.

State Senator Curtis Hertel says college girls are four times more likely to face sexual assault than any other group.

He thinks more education will help, so he’s sponsoring a bill that would require schools that have sex education classes go beyond ‘no means no’ and teach that a person needs their partner’s consent before engaging in sex.

It would also require schools teach that a person who has given consent can revoke it at any time and that an existing dating relationship doesn’t imply consent.

Identical legislation is being introduced in the House.
