Attempting to get someone to buy certain allergy and cold medicines for the purpose of making methamphetamine would be a misdemeanor, under bills that cleared the full Senate Tuesday.
A common ingredient in these medicines is ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, both key ingredients in making meth.
It’s currently a felony to have another person buy the drugs for the purpose of making meth.
This legislation would make it a misdemeanor just for asking a person to do it, even if they say no.
State Senator Margaret O’Brien is a sponsor.
She says the legislation is an attempt to make sure they’re arming judges and prosecutors with all the tools in the toolbox.
Those convicted of attempted solicitation could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The bill package now heads to the state House.
