Bill Would Keep Local Governments From Banning Plastic Bags

A bill passed by the Michigan Senate will prohibit the regulation of plastic bags and food containers by local governments.

It’s an effort from businesses to stop municipalities from banning the bags or even adding fees for their use.

Dan Papineau, with the Associated Food and Petroleum Dealers, says other parts of the country have seen negative effects from banning plastic bags.

Papineau says, though widely touted, he believes the use of recyclable bags in stores creates other problems.

The bill, which passed largely along party lines, will next go to the House for consideration.
