Bill Would Ensure Funding For Great Lakes Science Center

Legislation is being considered that is meant to spur Great Lakes funding and research efforts and help support effective fishery management decisions.

The bill was introduced by U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow along with Congressman Dan Benishek and Illinois Congressman Mike Quigley.

Peters says the Great Lakes Science Center protects our state’s fishing industry.

Among other things, the Center helps to protect the Great Lakes from the threats posed by invasive species.

Despite the size of the Great Lakes and the value of the fishery, the Great Lakes science program does not have the same funding authorizations as science centers on saltwater coasts.

This bill will provide federal funding opportunities to update technologies and create new research projects to benefit the Great Lakes.
