Bill Would Ease Restrictions On Bake Sales

A bill before a Michigan House Committee would ease current restrictions on bake sales in Michigan public schools.

It’s in response to new nutritional standards that have effectively shut down sales that include anything on the federal restricted list of approved food items for schools.

Boy Scouts testified before the committee this week, asking lawmakers to allow bake sales that include things like donuts and brownies.

Supporters say the federal government should not be dictating to local schools on bake sale policies.

Federal regulations require that all food served in a school building be on its list of approved items.

Others say the state should not abandon concern about the growing obesity problem among young people.

Under the proposal, bake sale decisions would be left to the school principal. The bill is before the House Education Committee.
