Bill To Untie Judicial Salaries From State Supreme Court Pay Clears Senate

A bill to decouple judges’ salaries from the pay of state Supreme Court Justices, was given final legislative approval in the Senate Wednesday.

Currently the salaries of judges in Michigan are tied to the salaries of the upper-court.

But bill sponsor, state Senator Rick Jones, says it’s very political at that level, so judges have not seen a pay increase in 15 years.

He says the legislation would take judges pay out of the political system and put it in the civil service system.

Under the change, judges’ salaries would be tied to the pay of nonunion state employees.

The measure now heads to the governor.
