A Michigan House committee is debating legislation to require the state to perform credit checks on children in foster care between the ages of 14 years old and 21 years old.
The state currently does credit checks on those between the ages of 14 years old and 18 years old.
A recent federal decision forced the state to lower the age for credit checks from 16 to 14.
Angela Aufdemberge president of Vista Maria in Dearborn Heights, recounted a number of cases were young women staying at the home for girls had their identity stolen when they were younger.
One was denied a summer job because someone had racked up $10,000 in credit card debt under her name.
Another had a mortgage taken out in her name – when she was ten years old.
The bill was note voted on during a recent hearing.
