Bill to Help Those who Inherit a gun Advances to the State House

A bill to make it easier for those who inherit a handgun to sell it is headed to the state House.

Under current law, a person in Michigan must be licensed to possess a pistol, but bill sponsor, state Senator Mike Shirkey says there’s some ambiguity when it concerns getting a handgun by inheritance.

He says his measure would clear up the issue by giving the inheritor thirty days to either sell the gun or get a license for it.

Shirkey says he was prompted to introduce the legislation after hearing from law enforcement that asked for clarity in the law.

The bill passed the full Senate Wednesday.
