Straight-ticket voting would be a thing of the past under legislation that cleared a House committee Tuesday.
The measure has already passed the Senate.
State Representative Jeff Irwin voted against the bill in committee saying it will create long lines on Election Day.
He says minorities in urban areas will run into the most problems.
State Representative Lisa Posthumus-Lyons acknowledges there could be issues on Election Day, which is why she wants the legislature to pass her bill to allow people to vote absentee without giving a reason.
To further that effort lawmakers voted to tie-bar the bill eliminating straight-ticket voting with Lyons’ no-reason absentee bill. That means if both bills aren’t signed in to law then neither becomes law.
The two measures now await a vote in the Michigan House.
