Legislation headed to the state House would crack down on companies that deceive Michigan citizens into buying public documents at inflated costs.
State Senator Curtis Hertel, who is a former register of deeds, is the main sponsor of the legislation.
He says these companies often deceive customers by sending out solicitations that look like bills and then charge $80 to $100 for a document that someone could get for just a few bucks at a local records office.
His legislation would require the companies include in their mailings that the public documents they are trying to sell are available locally as well as the cost of getting the documents from a local records office.
The bill was passed Thursday by the full Senate.
