Bill to Allow Wrongfully Imprisoned Compensation Advances to Senate

Legislation that would require the state compensate the wrongfully convicted is headed to the Senate.

Currently Michigan offers nothing to exonerees, but this bill would offer $60-thousand for each year a person is wrong fully imprisoned.

Sponsor, Senator Steve Bieda says the lives and reputations of these people have been devastated as a result of being imprisoned for a crime they didn’t commit.

He says it’s time Michigan do the right thing and provide compensation.

Thirty states and the federal government already offer compensation to those who have been exonerated.

The bill passed a Senate committee.
