Legislation intended to help an organ and tissue donation organization recover organs for transplant has been sent to the state House.
Senator Curtis Hertel is sponsoring the legislation that would allow the state’s federally designated organ procurement organization, Gift of Life Michigan, to perform organ removals at its new surgical center in Ann Arbor.
Hertel says the facility would help speed up the process for organ recovery, saving lives and time as well as health care dollars.
Current law only allows for surgery to remove organs or tissues at a licensed hospital or a facility approved by the Director of Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
The bill cleared the Senate Wednesday.
