Bill to Allow Brewers to Use Social Media to Promote Beer and Events Passes House Committee

Craft brewers and beer distributors in the state would be allowed to use Facebook and Twitter to promote beer events under legislation that recently passed a House committee.

Right now it’s illegal for either to mention a store by name that carries their beer or to promote an event at a bar.

It’s part of a wrinkle in the three-tier distribution system that forbids providing something of value to a bar or liquor store.

And a plug on social media is likened to advertising – which carries value.

The bill would also allow a distiller and wine maker to use social media to plug their products too.

A similar bill has been introduced in the Michigan Senate, although it’s currently tied up in a committee.
