Police body cameras would be regulated under a bill being considered Tuesday by a House committee in Lansing.
The Michigan House Judiciary Committee will take up a measure that, among other things, provides exemptions from the Freedom Of Information Act in certain situations.
The proposal says body camera records could only be released to the public if they’re relevant during a criminal investigation or prosecution.
The legislation also requires law enforcement to retain body camera recordings for at least 30 days, unless the recording is relevant to a complaint against a law enforcement agency or has been requested by an interested party, in which case it must be kept for three years.
The bill is sponsored by House Republican Jim Runestead of White Lake.
The ACLU, Michigan State Police and the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police support the measure.
