A measure introduced in the Michigan House looks to shape the future of social media interaction between teachers and students in the state.
State Representative Adam Zemke is behind the bill and says he hopes to talk about the good and the bad of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
He doesn’t think lawmakers should outright prohibit social media interaction between teachers and students noting it can be useful in the right circumstances.
Zemke’s bill is thin on details, which he says is done on purpose.
The one page, ten line bill lays out two components Zemke would like to see make whatever final legislation is worked out.
The first is that school districts have to work with teachers to set their social media policy and that teachers know what the policy is once it is implemented.
He’s working with interest groups on some pieces of the legislation and hopes to flesh out the rest of the details in a House committee sometime this fall.
