Bill Introduced to Increase Fines and Prison Time for Making Meth Near a School

Someone caught making methamphetamine within 100 feet of a school or library could face extra fines and jail time under a bill introduced in the Michigan House.

State Representative Ed McBroom drafted the bill after a meth lab was recently discovered near an elementary school in the Upper Peninsula.

He says the chemicals used to make meth are volatile and can cause an explosion.

Some meth labs have to be condemned because they’re contaminated.

The legislation would update the state’s Drug Free School Zone law to include the manufacture of meth.

The bill awaits a hearing in a House committee.

Lawmakers are currently on summer break, they return to Lansing on Tuesday.
