Riding a motorcycle without an endorsement on your driver’s license could catch you a steeper fine, under a bill passed by the state Senate Wednesday.
The current penalty is a $100 fine and/or up to 90 days in jail.
But that fine would go up to $500 for a first offense and $1,000 for a second violation, under the measure sponsored by Senator Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge.
He says $100 dollars isn’t enough and hopes the increased penalty will keep untrained motorcyclists off the roads.
Jones says 50 percent of motorcycle accidents involve unendorsed riders and they make up 40 percent of motorcyclist deaths.
To get a motorcycle endorsement in Michigan, you have to pass a written test, a road test and pay a $13.50 fee.
The state House passed similar legislation last month.
