Local governments would not be allowed to ban certain types of dogs, under a bill headed to the state House.
More than 30 Michigan communities currently have ordinances that ban pit-bull type dogs. This legislation would erase those laws.
Bill sponsor state Senator Dave Robertson says the responsibility for vicious dogs should rest on the owner, not with the animal.
But state Senator Rebekah Warren opposed the bill saying it strips communities of local control.
The legislation would not ban local governments from enacting laws concerning all dog breeds.
The bill was approved by the full Senate.
