Bill Encourages Better Communication On Oil Pipeline Safety

Oil companies that have pipelines running through the state of Michigan would be required to file emergency response plans for each pipeline with the state under legislation introduced in the Michigan House.

State Representative Lee Chatfield is sponsoring the bill.

The Republican, who represents parts of the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan, says while the state can’t prevent an oil spill from happening it can be prepared to respond to a disaster as long as it’s looped in to an oil companies planned response.

Federal law requires oil companies to have response plans in place but doesn’t require them to share those plans with state or local governments.

There’s mounting concern in Chatfield’s district that a 62 year old pipeline running under the Straits of Mackinac could burst.

Enbridge, the company that owns Line 5, claims it’s structurally sound.
