A bill creating a license for midwives in the state cleared the Michigan House Thursday.
The bill lays out what midwives can or cannot do and includes education and certification requirements.
Representative Edward Canfield, who is an Osteopathic physician, opposed the legislation saying when the state license people it suggest the activity is safe, he says it’s not safe.
But State Representative Ed McBroom, the bill’s sponsor, says in states that have already adopted midwife licensure the birth outcomes have not drastically changed and liability concerns have not gone through the roof.
The measure now heads to the Senate.
